Ambassador Lazăr Comănescu

Lazăr Comănescu is a Romanian diplomat. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs on November 17, 2015. He was also Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania between April and December 2008. He has held the diplomatic rank of Ambassador since 1998.
Between February and November 2015, he held the position of Presidential Adviser for Foreign Policy. For 6 years, between 2009 and 2015, he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to the Federal Republic of Germany. In the period 2001-2008 he was the head of the Romanian Mission to the European Union (until the end of 2006), respectively the Permanent Representative of Romania to the European Union (after the accession to the EU on January 1, 2007). Between 1998-2001 he held the position of head of the Romanian Mission to NATO and the EU.
During 1995-1998 he held the position of Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Previously, in 1995, he was Director General, Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief of Staff. Between 1994-1995 he was the director of the European Union Directorate, and between 1990-1994 he was counselor and minister-counselor (since 1993) at the Romanian Mission to the European Union - Brussels. Between 972-1982 he graduated from the Department of International Economic Organizations of the MFA.
During 1982-1990 he was a university lecturer at the department of international economic relations of the Academy of Economic Studies.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lazăr Comănescu, graduated in 1972 from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest (Faculty of Foreign Trade). In 1973 he graduated from the "Course in Civilization and the Contemporary French Language" at the Sorbonne, Paris. He holds the title of doctor in international economic relations since 1983.
He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Institute of Romania and a member of the Scientific Council of the Romanian Institute of International Studies. He is also a founding member of the Central European Forum - Warsaw.
In 2000 he was decorated with the National Order "Faithful Service" in the rank of Grand Officer, and in 2007 with the National Order "Faithful Service" in the rank of Grand Cross.
In 2015 he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit (rank of commander) of the Federal Republic of Germany.
He is the author or co-author of university courses and textbooks, including: "World Economy " - Edition 1985, 1990, 1995; " Techniques of international economic transactions " - 1989; "Dictionary of International Economic Relations" - 1993; " The EU and Romania: Accession and Beyond " - Ed. David Phinnemore, UK 2006.
He is the author of numerous articles / interviews on European and international topics in Romanian and foreign publications.
